NEC wins orders for hybrid power systems for three new ferries

Recently, Norwegian Power System (NEC) and Norwegian shipyard Havyard signed a contract to deliver hybrid power systems to three new ferries ordered by Fjord1.
According to reports, in December 2016, Fjord 1 and Havyard Shipyard signed a contract to build the three electric ferries. The first ship is expected to be delivered in May 2018, and the remaining two new ships will be delivered by the end of 2018.
It is reported that the new ship was designed by Multi Maritime to transport 50 cars and 199 passengers.
According to Norwegian Power Systems, the Norwegian Transport Authority’s strict pollution requirements for the three ferry-related routes have prompted these ferries to use electric propulsion systems and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The company has developed a DC system that will ensure the safe charging and discharging of these batteries, and will also upgrade the ferry in the future, using larger capacity batteries or shore-based power with greater charging capacity.
