Japan's Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd. (NPS) recently completed an environmentally-friendly technical test to meet the IMO's NOx Tier III standard to be implemented in January 2016.
At the time of testing, the ship's SCR technology was incorporated into a 1491 kW power mainframe of an offshore bulk carrier. The results showed that the system can reduce NOx by more than 80%. It is reported that since July last year, NPS has been engaged in ship testing to meet the Tier III standard marine SCR technology. It is difficult to achieve Tier III requirements by simply improving engine combustion, and additional exhaust aftertreatment is required, such as incorporating SCR technology into marine engines. To this end, traditionally used SCR technology for power plants has been optimised to be suitable for use in marine environments. In 1995, Niigata Power delivered Japan's first marine SCR technology product.
