Honda and GM expand cooperation to jointly develop driverless vehicles

In a comprehensive report, Honda plans to expand its cooperation with General Motors and develop a driverless vehicle in cooperation with the latter.

Honda and GM began cooperating in research and development of fuel cell vehicle systems in 2013. Both parties plan to launch new vehicles under their respective brands by 2020, and Honda plans to launch its independently developed fuel cell vehicle in 2016.

Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo stated that the cooperation between the two companies is progressing well and the company hopes to expand cooperation with GM. The areas of cooperation include driverless vehicles, information technology and electrification, and Honda has discussed this with GM.

GM had previously decided to launch a self-driving car in 2017. Honda does not have a definitive plan for manufacturing unmanned vehicles. On the other hand, GM is lagging behind Honda in terms of hybrid vehicles, and cooperation will enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of both parties.
